Nothing more than a hard wood stick (but sometimes made of bamboo or rattan) the bo staff traditionally measures six feet in length, but both shorter and longer versions are used depending on the situation and practitioner.
One of mankind's oldest weapons, the bo staff belongs to the spear family of weapons and was used long ago on occassion to carry buckets of water and/or grain. If attacked the defender would easily slip the buckets off his staff and use his staff to defend himself. Pretty handy back then. They were also used as a cane to help in walking for those who had trouble walking. The bo staff looked harmless but could be used as a very deadly weapon. Remember to give the movie time to load.
